• We’ve officially made it through our first week of home educating 😅 I thought I’d feel relieved once the deregistration letter was sent but mostly I keep wondering if we’re doing enough. My son is 10 and at the moment he just wants to build Lego, walk the dog and avoid anything that looks remotely like school work. I know people talk about deschooling but it still feels strange to step back. Did anyone else feel a bit lost at the beginning?

      • Oh yes. I spent the first month thinking I should have a timetable and colour coded folders ready 😂 My daughter mostly baked, drew and slept. Looking back she really needed that time. The learning started creeping back in once she felt safe enough.

        • We started in January and I felt exactly the same. Everyone said relax but its hard when your used to school telling you what should happen. It does get easier honestly.

          • My boy was 9 when we started and wouldn’t pick up a pencil for weeks. I panicked. Six months later he was writing pages about a game he wanted to design. Give yourselves time, it sounds like you’re doing just fine.

            • That lost feeling is so normal. You have stepped away from a system that used to provide the structure, even if it wasn’t working for your son. It takes time to trust that a quieter day can still contain plenty of learning. Walking the dog and building together sound like a lovely beginning.

              • Lego is maths, engineering and patience… I’d count it 😄

                • We kept things very simple at first: reading together, getting outside and following whatever questions came up. You don’t need to recreate six hours of school at home. One settled hour can be worth far more than a whole stressed day.
