We’re about six months into home education and I still have days when I wonder if we’re doing enough. Yesterday no books came out at all, but we baked bread, worked out how much paint we need for her bedroom and spent nearly two hours at the park identifying trees. I know there was learning in all of that, but part of me still expects to see completed work at the end of the day. Does that feeling ever go away?

Twelve years in and I still occasionally get that worried feeling of, “Am I giving him the best opportunities?” I don’t think it ever completely goes away.

It does get easier, although I still have the odd wobble after five years! I find it helps to look back over a whole month rather than judging individual days. You usually realise they have covered far more than you thought.

Yesterday mine spent most of the afternoon making a den and arguing about how to stop the roof falling in 😂 No written work at all, but plenty of planning, measuring, problem solving and negotiation!

I used to try to turn everything into a school subject so I could prove to myself that learning had happened. Eventually I realised I didn’t need to. Baking bread can simply be baking bread. They are still learning from it, even if we don’t label every part.

It comes and goes for me. Some weeks I feel completely confident and other weeks I question everything!

Thank you everyone! I feel a lot more confident now. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one and that even some of you that have been Home Edding a lot longer than me still get this feeling. Thanks again 😘
