Yes! Ours can recite the entire water cycle from one documentary but cannot remember where his shoes live. I’ve stopped taking the forgetting personally.

Mine is exactly the same. Knows every bone in the human body, cannot remember which drawer the socks live in.

Apparently it’s about whether it hooks onto something they already care about. Sock drawers don’t hook onto anything.

I used to over-explain and end up sounding defensive. Now I say ‘it suits him better’ and change the subject. The people who genuinely want to know will ask a second question.

Same problem here. What worked was looking outside the home ed listings entirely: the local sailing club, a repair cafe and a volunteering slot at the library all took her at thirteen.

Things for teenagers are really hard to find. My problem is that my children are at completely different age groups so I struggle to find something that they can both do together. There just seems like there is so much more for the younger children.

We leaned into it. Six months of nothing but sharks meant reading, writing, maths and geography, all of it disguised. It burned itself out eventually and moved on to volcanoes.

Every single day here. We gave in and moved our ‘lessons’ to the evening, and mornings became the free bit. Once I stopped fighting the clock it got a lot calmer.

Mine is fifteen and I honestly just fund the interest now. He taught himself more electronics in a summer than I could have planned in a year. My job turned into ordering parts and asking questions.
